HISTORY

I AM VOICES (IAV) was established as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in 2017 with the mission to provide support and empowerment to women survivors of sexual violence, human trafficking, and abuse. The organization initially began by hosting Sexual Assault 101 workshops, SEI camps, and community sexual violence awareness events. In 2019, IAV expanded its services by launching the I AM VOICES group sessions, providing a supportive environment for women to heal and share their experiences. In 2020, IAV introduced Box of Voices, a program that has helped over 2,300 girls, women, and families who have experienced sexual violence.

The organization’s impactful work continued in 2021 with the opening of the Blooming Flower Housing Program, the Tri-County area’s first transitional home dedicated to women who have experienced sexual violence, human trafficking, or abuse. Since its inception, the program has successfully graduated over 72 women, helping them build independent, empowered lives. The Blooming Flower Housing Program offers safe housing for up to 24 months, helping women regain stability and independence. In addition to housing, the program includes life skills training, job placement, financial literacy, and therapy, ensuring women receive the holistic support they need. IAV’s case management program tailor’s resources and guidance to each woman’s specific goals, while the therapy program provides weekly sessions to help women process trauma.

In 2022, IAV introduced the Blooming Buds Garden at the Miner Crosby Community Center, a survivor-participant-led community garden that promotes healing, growth, and empowerment. The garden moved to Foxbank Plantation in Moncks Corner, SC, in 2023, where it serves the local community with fresh fruits, herbs, flowers, and vegetables. Over 300 community members, volunteers, and participants came together to plant and celebrate growth and fellowship. In 2024, I AM VOICES placed this garden in the Blooming Flower Housing program.

Throughout 2023, IAV made significant strides in expanding its reach and impact. The organization saw increases in the number of financial donors (25%), volunteers (64%), and women receiving housing counseling (61.9%). Its community outreach efforts grew by 7.5%, and IAV provided a range of services, such as hygiene kits, medical care partnerships, and employment opportunities for women. Through its programs, 100% of the women served in 2023 found employment and moved forward to live healthy, empowered lives. IAV remains committed to breaking the cycle of violence, providing a supportive environment for women to heal, grow, and rebuild their lives.

IAV has served over 3000 girls and women through its programs, trainings, group sessions, services, and workshops since its inception. The organization has been featured in numerous publications such as The Post and Courier, ABC News, Channel 5 News, 1390 Radio Station, Bounce Around Charleston, News 2, The Voyager magazine, and more. IAV has also been the recipient of grants from organizations including the Charleston Realtor Association, the City of North Charleston, Volvo, Blackbaud, and many others. We believe that with the proper support system, every young woman can restore and believe in the power of her voice. If you’re interested in getting involved, reach out at info@iamvoices.org.

The I AM VOICES team members are elected to provide strategic guidance in the fulfillment of the mission so that women survivors or those at risk can build better lives and have access to restorative care through our programs.
