Healing Is Personal, and Survivors Deserve Choices

Survivor-centered support is not about deciding what is best for someone. It is about providing safety, information, and options so survivors can direct their own journeys.

After experiencing sexual violence or sex trafficking, survivors are often surrounded by people and systems telling them what they should do next.

Report. Leave. Forgive. Speak publicly. Stay quiet. Move on.

Even when advice is well-intended, it can overlook something essential: healing is personal.

Survivor-centered care recognizes that people have different needs, timelines, cultures, responsibilities, and definitions of progress. One person may want counseling immediately, while another may need time before they are ready. One may choose to participate in the legal process, while another may focus first on housing, family, healthcare, or employment.

At I AM VOICES, our role is not to take over a survivor’s decisions. Our role is to provide information, resources, encouragement, and a safe environment where those decisions can be made.

Choice matters because violence and exploitation are rooted in the removal of power and control. Supporting a survivor’s autonomy is therefore more than a service approach—it is part of restoring what was taken from them.

That can look like asking, “What would feel most helpful right now?” It can mean explaining options without pressure, respecting boundaries, and understanding that a survivor’s priorities may change over time.

When you support I AM VOICES, you help make individualized care possible. Your contribution allows us to respond to the person in front of us rather than forcing every survivor into the same path.

Survivors deserve more than services. They deserve choices, dignity, and the freedom to define healing for themselves.
