Healthy love does not control, frighten, isolate, or silence. This February, we are making room for a more honest conversation about love, safety, and support.
February brings countless messages about love. We see flowers, cards, romantic gestures, and reminders to celebrate the people closest to us. But this month also gives us an opportunity to say something that every person deserves to hear: love should never require silence.
Love should not demand that someone ignore their fear, hide their pain, surrender their independence, or disconnect from the people who care about them. It should not involve control, exploitation, threats, manipulation, or violence.
For survivors, recognizing that a relationship or situation is unsafe may be only the beginning. Leaving can bring significant risks and barriers, including housing instability, financial dependence, fear of retaliation, concern for children or family members, and the absence of a trusted support system. The question should not be, “Why didn’t they leave?” A better question is, “What support would make safety possible?”
At I AM VOICES, we meet survivors without judgment. We listen. We believe them. We help identify options while respecting each person’s right to make decisions about their own life and healing.
Community support plays an important role in that process. A survivor may need emergency assistance today, transportation tomorrow, and encouragement months from now. Sustainable support allows us to respond to those changing needs with care and consistency.
This month, let love look like action. Let it look like believing survivors, learning about available resources, supporting organizations doing the work, and helping create a community where no one must exchange their safety for connection.
Make a gift in honor of someone you love and help provide safety, dignity, and practical support to survivors.
